About the Wild Atlantic Way

About Rosalind

Ireland's Wild Atlantic Way is the breathtaking coastline that runs from cutesy Kinsale just south of Cork, up the west coast to Muff village in Donegal, with its rough coastline and local whiskey.

I travelled the route over long weekends over a number of years, and I feel that the wind and the waves call to me.  At every turn, rocky cliff faces meld into surprising quiet and perfect beaches.

There are some spots that I can't get enough of: the secret strand at Barleycove; the Beara peninsula at Allihies, the thundering sea at Down Patrick Head; and the elusiveness of the Skelligs.

The weather is part of the beauty - it is windy and rough and wild, and best faced with waterproof shoes, a big fleece, and a thermos.  During the lockdown years, Ireland developed a cottage industry of hot coffee being sold out of horse boxes in local beauty spots, and even in normal times, there's always a nearby pub and a steaming bowl of seafood chowder on a cold day.

I paint wherever I go.  I love to travel, and I take my watercolours with me.  Many of my paintings are completed en plein air, and when I return home, I use the photos I took to create bigger or more beautiful paintings.  In the Irish context, I've found a rhythm of going to the windswept cliffs in the morning, then retreating out of the weather to a pub for a local whiskey and a quick watercolour in the afternoon.

I aim to capture some of the majesty of Ireland's stunning seascapes, and I invite you to explore this collection.  Let my paintings convey to you some of the beauty and fierceness of the Wild Atlantic Way.
